Mentha piperita Explained: Peppermint Leaf, Powder, Oil, and Extract

Mentha piperita is the botanical name for peppermint—a familiar plant with a surprisingly complex supplement story. On a label, the words “peppermint,” “peppermint leaf,” “peppermint powder,” “peppermint extract,” and “peppermint oil” do not necessarily describe the same ingredient.

That difference matters. It affects what is in the capsule, how concentrated it is, and how closely published research applies to the product in your hand.

What is Mentha piperita?

Mentha × piperita, often written as Mentha piperita, is peppermint. It is a natural hybrid of watermint and spearmint and belongs to the mint family. The leaves contain nonvolatile plant compounds, while peppermint essential oil contains concentrated volatile compounds that give peppermint its characteristic aroma and cooling sensation.

A 2006 scientific review by McKay and Blumberg described rosmarinic acid and flavonoids such as eriocitrin, luteolin, and hesperidin among the phenolic constituents of peppermint leaves. The same review identified menthol and menthone as major components of peppermint essential oil.

In plain language: the whole leaf and the essential oil come from the same plant, but they are not interchangeable materials.

What the clinical literature actually studied

A 2025 systematic review evaluated 16 human clinical trials involving Mentha preparations and gastrointestinal conditions. Most of those trials used peppermint oil. In the irritable bowel syndrome studies summarized by the authors, the interventions were commonly enteric-coated capsules containing about 182 to 225 mg of peppermint oil, taken more than once daily for roughly two to eight weeks. Some studies reported improvements, while two did not find peppermint oil superior to the comparison for most outcomes.

This is meaningful research, but it is formulation-specific. Findings from concentrated peppermint oil cannot automatically be transferred to peppermint leaf powder, tea, or a mixed botanical supplement. Dose, preparation, coating, schedule, and study population all matter.

The McKay review reached a similar boundary: human research had focused on peppermint oil, while human studies of peppermint leaf were limited and clinical trials of peppermint tea were absent at that time.

The full review also described formulation-specific cautions. In one small human study, peppermint tea reduced absorption of non-heme iron from a meal; another study found that peppermint oil changed exposure to the prescription drug felodipine. These findings do not establish the same effect for every peppermint powder or capsule, but they reinforce a practical rule: people taking medication or managing a nutrient deficiency should discuss regular botanical-supplement use with a qualified clinician.

How to read a peppermint supplement label

Before comparing products, look for four details:

  1. Plant name: Is Mentha piperita clearly identified?
  2. Plant part: Does the label identify leaf or another plant part?
  3. Preparation: Is it powder, extract, or essential oil?
  4. Amount: Is the quantity stated for the actual ingredient or only for a proprietary blend?

A transparent label makes it easier to understand what you are taking—and prevents research on one peppermint preparation from being used to imply results for another.
